Privacy
Course description
In ten lectures, privacy issues will be discussed from various disciplines. The first lecture will be a prelude, the last a conclusion. Halfway through the program an excursion willl be organized so that students will get a more concrete picture of privacy related issues in practice. The remaining seven courses will cast a light on the privacy related issues in seven different disciplines. These lectures will be given by top scientists from various faculties of the University of Amsterdam. The subjects and their teachers are: Philosophy by Beate Roesler, anthropology by Sjaak van der Geest, psychology by Skyler Hawk, medicine by Corrette Ploem and Martin Boeckhout, Informatics by Guido van 't Noordende, law by Egbert Dommering and economy by Edo Roos Lindgreen.
Every class will always be divided into two parts: the part before the break and the part after the break. Before the break, the traditional paradigm and the traditional problems with regard to privacy are discussed. This gives the students a good overview and a fundamental understanding of the basic problems surrounding privacy in a certain domain. The second part will be devoted to a current dilemma or new developments in the relevant discipline. We will always be looking for a shift in the paradigm or for a change regarding the major dilemma’s. This gives the student not only a good idea of the traditional privacy issues, but is also stimulated to think about new developments and to formulate an opinion or vision on future developments of its own. In the second part of the class a group of 2 or 3 students shall present in 10 minutes their view on the new developments in a certain discipline.
