Semester 1 2011-2012

Foundations of Cognitive Science

Representations lie at the heart of cognition, and researchers study the form of these representations, their formation in learning and development, and their transformation in reasoning or deliberation. This course provides the student with an understanding of the basic tenets of Cognitive Science and the representational theory of mind will be illustrated by a number of case studies (e.g., Category Learning, Imagery, and others). This course is obligatory for all students in the track Cognitive Science. Other students will be allowed if the course isn't full and they have sufficient background.

Cognition, Language and Communication

All animals communicate, but only humans have language. In this course we investigate how human language relates to non-linguistic and non-human communication, and how it relates to other cognitive functions. This course is obligatory for all students in the track Cognitive Science. Other students will be allowed if the course isn't full and they have sufficient background.

Matlab Programming for Data Analysis

The course will comprise a basic introduction to MATLAB, designed to be suitable for students with little prior programming knowledge. The program will be based on introductory lectures and hand-on assignments, with the help and supervision of expert programmers. As far as possible, the work will be based on real data from neuroscience experiments. There will be an introduction of basic techniques to analysis behavioral tracking data, EEG and single unit electrophysiological data.

Introduction to Neuroscientific Methods and Brain Anatomy

In this course students receive a broad introduction in the anatomy of the human brain. Course materials are supported by interactive use of computerized brain atlases. The emphasis in this course will be on the so-called 'model-based approach' where neuroscientific methods are informed by cognitive model parameters that quantify latent psychological processes.

Experimental Neurobiology

Research in contemporary neuroscience requires a solid foundation in quantitative experimental methods. This course is aimed at providing students with an overview of experimental techniques used in behavioral neuroscience.

Semester 2 2011-2012

Cognitive Models of Language and Beyond

This course will give an up-to-date overview of cognitive models of language processing and acquisition. We will discuss each model and we will investigate differences and commonalities between the various models, and discuss what they have to say about the nativism-empiricism debate.

Hot Topics in Linguistics and Cognition

In this course a number of topics that are currently subject to linguistic debate will be introduced and discussed. Such topics may include discussions as to whether every natural language exhibits recursion, discussions about the autonomy of language as a cognitive function or discussions about the role of economy in natural language.

Music Cognition

Why do we have music? Is it mere cultural phenomenon or is music biologically constrained? And if the latter is the case, is it possible to identify which biological and/or cognitive traits make us musical animals? This course discusses recent developments in the research field of music cognition, such as the role of perception, attention, and memory in music listening, as well as the shaping role of these cognitive mechanisms in the origins of music.
